MY STRONG FAMILY - Substance Abuse
“Bacchus hath drowned more men than Neptune.”
Dr. Thomas Fuller (1654–1734), Gnomologia, 173

Although most people use chemicals responsibly, substance abuse is not a diminishing problem in our society. Alcohol and marijuana remain the most prevalently used and abused substances, leading to significant family conflict, personal suffering and education/career limitations. One of the greatest benefits to a substance abuse assessment is determining if a problem exists, and, if it does, to what extent it does exist. From that determination, recommendations are provided, so the client can make reasonable decisions about his or her life and the use of mood altering substances.

A thorough assessment will, of course, explore the amount, extent and repercussions of a person’s chemical use. But, more importantly, it will explore how alcohol or drug use fits with his or her life values, identity and goals. This kind of determination can be deeply personal and is never made by a check-box questionnaire. And although there are objective standards and guidelines proven helpful to these evaluations, it is best made with an understanding of the personal context and taking into consideration individual preferences and liberties.

Paul Buckley has training and experience in providing assessments in the court-preferred Rule 25 and Rule 31 formats. Upon completion of the assessment, the client will receive a court-submitable report. This service is thorough, supportive of the client, and highly confidential.
