MY STRONG FAMILY - Family Perspective

The family perspective. . .
The unpredictability of life guarantees that all families will experience sadness, frustrations and anger from time to time, be they induced by events as sorrowful as the death of a loved one or as mundane as a failed spelling test. Due to various factors, in many families, these difficult feelings accumulate like invisible bricks, forming walls between caring people. While these walls are “functional,” as they provide a familiar though uncomfortable place of refuge, they nevertheless extract a high cost in the form of isolation, resentment and/or sadness. Perhaps the greatest cost is how these walls can block the love and support that could otherwise be shared and felt among family members.

Family therapy engages the underlying love within a family, while at the same time acknowledging the invisible bricks that have diminished people’s connectedness and, therefore, their capacities to express honest emotions and openly relate to one another. Over time, with family therapy, the bricks of defensiveness: blame, anger and avoidance, are dismantled to leave room for empathy, respect, responsibility and acceptance.

Family therapy worked for us because I knew my 9 year old daughter’s problems at school had a lot to do with how my husband, Ted, and I were fighting and disagreeing about family issues. Family therapy helped us figure it out without feeling even worse about things. We learned to parent as a team and how to support each other better. Our daughter is much happier.”- Client Family.

Count on family therapy to be often challenging, sometimes humorous and always heart-expanding.
